Joomla! - frontend explained
To look at a Joomla! website its best to look at a site in two ways.
The Frontend
Firstly, there's what's known as the Joomla! frontend.
The frontend can be described as the part of the website which gets published. When I say the published part of a website, I mean the part that the owner of the website wants the public or selected groups to see when they open the site in their internet browser.
Therefore, the frontend of a Joomla! site looks just like any other modern website.
Joomla! as with many other Content Management Systems (CMS) allows us to select the level of interactivity between the site and the users of the frontend, eg. we can provide a register and login form, which will allow users to become members of the site. We can ask them to sign up to newsletters or ebulletins. They can post on discussion forums, they can buy goods, they can even post articles and pictures for general publishing.
If you own a website built using Joomla! you may decide to only have access through the frontend of the site. If you have sufficient access level you would be able to write, publish and unpublish content from any computer in the world as long as it has internet access.
In most cases gaining access to publish and unpublish articles or any other content would require at the very minimum registration with the site, so that when you login you provide a username and a password.
That's it for the frontend, now lets take a look at the all important backend.
