Installing Virtuemart

Many people have problems doing a new install of virtuemart, so here's a few tips on how to make your install into Joomla pain free.

First of all download the latest version from the Virtuemart website.  You will need the complete package file.

This package file you download from Virtuemart is not the Joomla installation file so you will need to unpack the file on your computer before trying to install.  Double click the zip file and it will unpack.

Inside the package file you will see the component zip file and two folders for modules and plugins.

I have found the modules and plugins install without any problem through the Joomla install screen.

The problem which seems to most commonly occur is installing the component itself through the Joomla install screen.  This is probably due to the size of the component and Joomla not allowing it to upload.

The simplest way round this is to upload the component zip file using your ftp software of choice and then use Joomla's install manager to install the component.

Installing Virtuemart using ftp software

This is how I upload and install the component through Dreamweaver's ftp manager, this is probably the same with other ftp managers, I just haven't tried them.

Having downloaded the Virtuemart package and unzipped it.

I then go to my ftp manager and connect to my site online.  I can then download the tmp folder from my Joomla installation.

I take the virtuemart component zip file and transfer it to the tmp folder which now resides in my site's local root folder (on my computer).

I can then click upload (or in the case of Dreamweaver 8 - right click and "Put").  This uploads the zip file to my site tmp folder online.

I then go to Joomla's install manager and in the bottom input box (Install from URL) I put the following address after "http://" www.mydomainaddress.com/tmp/com_virtuemart_x.x.x.zip.  Then click upload and Virtuemart installs no problem.

I hope this helps some people out there, if it has then feel free to link to it or share this informatin.
