Places vs Organic

This is an interesting problem that recently occurred regarding Google Places and Google's Organic listing.

I have to say this is probably a unique set of circumstances, but what happened illustrates the effect of Google Places on Google Organics listing for a particular search term.

Take a newly refurbished website that had previously been doing very well in Google's organic ranking

The site was relaunched and the site initially showed up in the organic search for the number one desired search term - 2nd in fact.

The customer then created a Google Places listing.  The Google Places listing showed up on Google's first page no problem.

However the organic listing disappeared - it was just gone.

Extensive reading was required and after digging around the internet for about a week I found the reason why.

When you do a search, there will be three plus sections to the search.  The ads, Google Places and the organic results. This is what's known as a "blended" result.

If a particular page from your site gets listed in Google Places then it won't list in the organic search as this would be seen as a duplicate result or duplicate content.

If you want to know how your page lists purely in the organic search then you need to filter the results.  The way to do this is to type the following in your search box without the speach marks "&filter=0" followed by your search term.  So for example if you want to find out where your page lists organically for the search term "blue widgets" then type in:

&filter=0 blue widgets

So, if you ever lose an organic listing after adding a Google Places listing this article will hopefully help you to sleep better at night.
